Law books and its availability

law-booksLaw has always been a controversial subject for us humans. Formulated to make governance and control easier, there are millions of ways and means through which humans break the laws everyday.

Different countries have different laws and in countries like the United States of America, every state has different laws to boot. Every day millions of people all over the world break the law, in some way or the other. People murder others, steal things, and commit acts of terror and so many other things. All these acts affect the world in some way or the other. The governments of the different countries try hard and combat crimes in different ways. There are many organizations that are created in order to fight crime and then there are the different police forces which try and control criminal activities. But then there is one thing which should be kept in mind and that is the fact that the function of law is just not to punish, that is punitive but preventive as well. That basically implies that the presence of law is not only to take care of matters after they have gone wrong but to prevent situations from going wrong as well. Thus law is a very complicated issue and there are tens of ways in which law bifurcates and branches into different kinds of law. For example there is Admiralty law, aviation law, bankruptcy law, civil rights, consumer rights, corporate law, criminal law, education, elder law, employment law, entertainment law, family law, immigration law, intellectual property, labour law, Military law, personal injury law, product liability, real estate, taxation, and so on.

There are so many different kinds of law that any lawyer looking to specialize in law will be bewildered and ultimately spoilt for choice. Since there are so many different kinds of law, therefore law is a very complex issue to deal with and it takes a considerable amount of expertise and efficiency to deal with any matters concerning any form or branch of law that may be required. To have a complete knowledge of the law is well next to impossible. However, grasping any small matter of the law is very time consuming as well and therefore one must really study hard and study well to be able to deal with it. Even a working knowledge of the law requires long hours of study and intense concentrated effort on the part of the student. There are many students who want to study law and take up a legal career as a profession. But the problem is not many can stick through the grueling years of study and hard work which can take up most of one’s time. Mostly it is a five year course and therefore it is a very tough course to do. Thus, though there are many students who do opt for the course, most of them drop out by the second or the third years of the curriculum. This is because the pressure is too much.

The law books are famed to be very thick and notoriously complex to get through. These law books form one of the main parts of the syllabus of a law student. The basic point about a law book is the fact that it teaches the various complex matters of the law and other details to the student. Not only that, a  law book is a very helpful guide to seasoned legal professionals as well. These books help to straighten out many a legal issue and therefore prove to be invaluable sources of help to those who are trying to sort out a legal mess. However there is one thing that one must keep in mind. The language in which a law book is written is notoriously long winded and full of the famous or rather infamous legal jargon. This can be Greek to those who do not have any knowledge of the law at all. So a law book will only make sense to a legal professional.

There are different law books available and like all books, there are the good books and the bad books. So, one must be really careful in case you are going to buy a good law book because there are certain things that you must keep in mind. The most easiest option might just be the cozy little bookstore next door but the point is that the best books and the most profitable of deals are available in the big world of the world wide web or what we all know and love as the Internet.

Law books are very expensive in terms of the price that they are offered at the-lawand it is often impossible to get to afford a proper law book and that too, at a reasonable price. The fact of the matter in the current scenario is that since the prices of academic books are going up, there are these web based book stores which are developing and also offering you really good deals to boot. This one modus operandi must be familiar to a lot of people. Many people swear by the Amazon, which is the online bookstore and not a river in South America in case there are any laymen who might be wondering what the hype about the Amazon is all about.  The Amazon is just not a bookstore though it is claimed to be so but is also a  retail enterprise. Most of the books that you need can be found at the hallowed portals of Amazon. Nowadays Amazon sells more of used books and thus there are ways and means through which you can get a really good deal. You can get the best of deals and the best of law books that you want, right here! However, there are online places other than Amazon where you can find out the best deals for used law books and get good deals as well. This place is called Half.com. True to its name, it lives up to its standards as well and Half.com is powered by eBay. The main deal is to sell old books at a good price to the clients. Other things like CDs, DVDs, etc are also found there. However, you have got to stop being picky about the condition of the books that are sold here. You can find books with prices starting at 1 cent as well. But these will be in a truly threadbare condition. There are many audio books for the law books as well. These will save you the trouble of reading. Though they don’t have too many textbooks they do have a really good collection of some e-books. These can prove to be really useful in times of need. Then there is Chegg. These work similar to NetFlix. You order DVDS in bulk, see them, then return them and order another bunch. Chegg does the same thing and only this time around, it is with the textbooks and not DVDs. There is also Alibris with their coupon system. Luckily there are some online bookstores which only deal with law books. This should be a godsend for all those people who are looking for good deals in law books. These places to frequent are LawBooks.com, Wildys.com, and Nolo.com. The best thing about these is the fact that they store law books which are usually very rare and as a result really hard to find as well. There are many book exchange networks in operation as well. With these, one can exchange books with other people. This usually works very well in the colleges where there are many exchange networks which are functioning. One such great website is the very suitable named Bookswap.com and then there is also Craig as well.

If you are someone who likes your share of freebies, then there are some websites which offer lots of free law books as well. This means that you do not have to pay for all those expensive law books. There are some websites and these include Onlinebooks4free.com and others. This website has many useful law books like ‘8 Who Lie in the Death House’ by Paul Peters (frame-dependent page images at MSU)

There are many other law books as well which would be extremely useful to any student of law or any legal professional for that matter.

One of the most famous legal bookstores is Wildy & Sons Ltd. This bookstore has been in operation since the year of 1830. They are one of the most famous legal booksellers in the business and have been in the scene for almost three hundred years. This place is a very good combination of the old and the new. Though it has the most updated collection of all the latest law books to be published, the place also has an amazing collection of old and rare legal books that are out of print and not available in the market today. Thus there are the latest paperbacks to the old and ancient tomes as well.

There is another famous law books publisher which is called Irwin Law. This is Canadian and one of the best again. They plan to change the age old maxim that all law books have to be expensive. They produce good books at an affordable price and are continuously updating themselves. They are Canada’s youngest publisher. It was founded in 1966, and was affiliated to the Stoddart Publishing Group.

old-law-booksLaw books are in use by all members of the legal profession as well as students who are studying to become the same. The best part is the fact that even with the advancement of technology and the development of the Internet, law books are still very relevant in the legal profession as these books contain a vivid history of the evolution of law and jurisprudence and all the developments that led to the present legal scenario today. The history and all that went behind the evolution of the modern legal system is vital if one has to understand and comprehend the current happenings. There is a rich and eventful event which is the key to all that is happening today and that is the reason why law books are still so valued and revered even today inspite of the fact that most of the information which is contained in those very books are mostly outdated and irrelevant. This is of course the old law books that I am talking about and not the newest paperback on the shelves. Old law books still retain their pride of place even today and that too with everyone who is involved in the legal profession in some way or the other. There is always the question of the legal precedents and these are of utmost importance in verdicts of the similar kind even today. Law books have a very important part to play in society and the fact is that they are still used as important research material. We all know how the advent of the internet has changed things for good in the world. Also, nowadays the lawyers use the Internet and other means to conduct research to gain an insight into legal problems and especially during times of lawsuits and the like. However, even now, people have been unable to deny the fact that law books are still of prime importance when it comes to researching and especially that of legal precedents. Lawyers still spend hours and days in researching and reading through these books to get an insight that will give them the winning edge over the opponents. These law books tell you the fine nuances and the tips and tricks of the trade.

It is said that collecting old laws books and adding them to libraries is like a great asset as these books are greatly required by all the lawyers as well as the students who are studying to try and become successful lawyers as well. It is commonly believed that no law office can be complete without having these old law books in it and that too, not only for the face value but for some actual utility as well. These books are required in extensive research and every attorney has at some point or the other, pored over some ancient tome of law. Many believe that any law book collection begins with the collecting of old law books and keeping them in the office. These can be invaluable and act as major points of reference in the office.

There are many reasons why law books and especially old law books should be regarded as collectibles and valuable ones that too. But old law books often contain remarks and annotations by the previous owners and these remarks can be invaluable in law cases and as extra reference or just trivia. Also, certain editions of certain legal books can be very valuable in the market if they are in great demand for their valuable content and also for the fact that they might have gone out of print as well. In these situations or, as one should say, cases, these old law books can be great assets to the owners and that too, not only financially, but more so because of the knowledge contained within its pages. The price and value of a law book also increases if the content of the book is still relevant in today’s scenario and is not applicable any more today.  Also, buying old law books and protecting them by keeping them away from sunlight and water and so on. This way, old and valuable books can be protected and preserved without them getting destroyed. Moisture, heat and sunlight can really destroy books for keeps and render them beyond repair for good.

There are many kinds of law books that can be found and lots of these are found not only in the bookstores that sell law books but also in the numerous libraries that store law books. One of the kinds are the American Law Reports or the ALR. These have annotations and basically analyze one particular legal matter and also looks at various court cases from different jurisdictions concerning or related to the subject. One legal issue is discussed in great detail.

Then there are the Casebooks. These are more of the textbook variety and are usually used by students in the legal professions. These casebooks are filled with cases of different kinds. However, the cases discussed here are some leading and very important in the formation and the development of the legal history until the modern day. The cases are reported and are not analyzed. These cases can either be state or federal or even both. There are many examples of casebooks like Cases and Materials on Children in the Legal System by Wadlington, Whitebread, & Davis, 1983, Debtors and Creditors : Cases and Materials, by Epstein& Landers, 1978. Another type of law book is the Case Reporter. These are books which contain opinions given by the courts on legal matters and why and how particular cases are solved using some laws. The use of the laws and their validity in reference to those particular lawsuits are discussed and justified. These laws include the common law and later, these verdicts are used as legal precedents by the courts who usually consult these verdicts when they come across cases of a similar kind. Then there are the Codes, another kind of law books. These codes are basically a collection of many statutes, and ordinances which are absolutely binding on the courts who have to follow them. There are two different kinds of codes and these are the federal and the state codes. The three federal codes are the official United States Code (U.S.C.), and the two unofficial codes which are the United States Code Annotated (U.S.C.A.), and the United States Code Service (U.S.C.S.). Then there are the Court Rules. These are procedural statutes or rules which decide the criminal as well as the civil legal practices which are followed in the codes. These are very detailed as well. The Digests are indexes. This means that they have the reported cases in the indexed format. Then there are the popular Legal Encyclopedias. These discuss many legal issues.

In that case there are many ways in which a law student can save the money on law books and still get to learn as much. Here are the seven best ways to save money on the law books.

One: One way to get a good deal on law books is by starting to get into shopping earlier so that you can have the time to visit different places and compare prices and then get the better deal. If you start late you will not have that kind of time to spare at all. Also, if you are buying second hand, starting to look earlier will get you books which are in a better condition.

Two: Whenever you go book shopping never buy it at the first place that you see. Always go around a few more places and compare the prices. So places will get you a better deal and cheaper prices as well. There are many places online where you can buy law books and also be able to compare the prices. These are

  • A1Books.com
  • AbeBooks.com
  • Amazon.com
  • eBay.com
  • eBay’s Half.com
  • LawBooksforLess.com

Three: There are some websites like BigCrumbs.com and Ebates and these give you your cash back as they are cash back portals. Then the others like TextbookCoupons.com, RetailMeNot.com, and DealCatcher.com advixe you on discounts and coupons and the like.

Four: Save the money and borrow the books that you need from the library. law-schoolAll the law school libraries have a copy of all the required textbooks so that you can borrow them as and when you need. Other libraries also have the same features. As a result you can always borrow the books from the libraries.

Five: You can also share the books with your friends. Make some friends who have the same classes that you do and then share the books with them. This way you get to learn, have the book and still save a certain amount of money.

Six: This method is not something that will be in your hands in 1L. At this level all the classes will be chosen and you will not have any hand in it. However at a later level look out for classes that do not need to many textbooks, or ones which have reading and research material online and so on. Taking some of these classes will actually save a lot of your money.

Seven: There will be many law books that will have supplements along with them. These supplements cost extra and therefore, do not buy them unless it is an absolute necessity. If the professor is bound to refer to that in class then it is a good idea to buy it. So find out in advance how much the supplement is necessary really.

There is another way to save a little bit of money on law books. When you are buying a law book try and buy one which is one edition back. This means not buying the latest edition of a particular book as that is bound to cost more than the older editions. Also, there are usually very minor differences between one edition and the next. Compare the two and if you see that there aren’t any changes or very few of them, then just buy the older edition. Another thing is to see how many credits a class is giving you. There is no point in buying expensive law textbooks for a class which will give you only one credit as compared to a class which gives you four credits.
